Crops stage

I would like to add some textures on the different stage of a crops during the process. What I must to change/add ?

A example of the crop (tomato)

This isn't possible without hurting preformance, usually this would be done with item frames, but too many of those can hurt server preformance, so this isn't possible at the moment.
