How does the World Populator work?

Hello, I have a custom world (made in WorldPainter & WorldMachine). Does IA's world populator work on chunk load or chunk generation?

Is it possible to setup world populators settings and then pregen the world with Chunky to generate custom blocks? Or it only works with vanilla worlds?

Ores will spawn only on new generated chunks (generated after ItemsAdder installation). This is exactly how vanilla Minecraft works. Chunky will work just fine and generate the custom ores, I tested it
