Conversion works on chunk load so there should be no issue, you can install the most recent version directly, but please read each changelog in case I stated something that needs to be manually done.
Also you should really make a backup before doing that, it's one of the things I stated in the changelogs for the first new builds of the plugin.
Anyway the conversion was tested for over a month before release and it's now online since February without errors.
